In the two-part documentary THE CIRCLE OF POVERTY the problems of poverty in the Netherlands gets a human face. Despite of the cheerful presentation of the recent government budget, there are a lot of people who don’t do that well. There are around 642.000 households in the Netherlands who have to live under the borders of poverty. According to the most recent figures of the CBS these figures didn’t go down in the last years.
THE CIRCLE OF POVERTY-I takes place in the small office of the foundation Service Platform in Amsterdam South East. This foundation is settled in an apartment in a somewhat deteriorate flat. Many clients walk in and out looking for help. Mostly people who seem to get grind because of increasing debt and lack of money. They seem imprisoned in a world where they are depending on forms and correctly filled in papers.
In THE CIRCLE OF POVERTY-II the life of the 35-year-old Celine Barnwell take central stage. Celine looks like the perfect stereotype of the present-day poor mother; female, unmarried and mother of two children. Yet Celine, from origin Surinam, is anything but a cliché figure. She contributes in a special way for her fellow sufferers as volunteer at the food court and the service platform.
THE CIRCLE OF POVERTY was broadcasted by the Dutch public television on December 4 and 11, 2006.
